Denver itself is flat, open and sunlit, and the mountains start twenty minutes west of it. That geography is the whole market: the city supplies the corporate and family work, and the Front Range supplies the elopements that people fly in for. Altitude changes the light in ways that catch photographers who have not worked at elevation. The air is thinner, so shadows are harder, the sky photographs deeper blue, and ultraviolet haze at distance is stronger than it looks. The practical effect is that midday is less usable here than the sunshine statistics suggest, and the hour after sunrise is exceptional. The permit landscape has three layers and they matter. Denver requires a free Film Operational Permit in city parks only when a shoot goes beyond handheld equipment or a single tripod, or brings 25 or more people. Red Rocks, owned by the city, runs its own hours around concerts. And Rocky Mountain National Park — ninety minutes north-west — is National Park Service land, where a handheld session of eight or fewer needs no permit but a ceremony needs a Special Use Permit at one of thirteen designated sites, two a day per site.

Timing
September is the best month: golden aspen in the high country from mid-September through the first week of October, warm days, cold mornings, and the summer storms finished. June and July bring wildflowers to the alpine meadows and a near-daily afternoon thunderstorm that builds by one o’clock — mountain sessions in summer are morning sessions, and that is a safety rule rather than a preference. Winter is bright, dry and cold, with reliable snow above 8,000 feet. Spring is the weakest season: brown, windy, and Denver’s snowiest month is March.

Yes. A wedding ceremony anywhere in Rocky Mountain National Park requires a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service, at one of thirteen designated sites, with no more than two weddings per site and six in the park per day, and 30 people at most; the administrative fee is $300. Applications open a year ahead, and May to October 2026 is fully booked. Still photography alone for eight or fewer, handheld, needs no permit.
From about the third week of September through the first week of October, moving down in elevation as the weeks pass — the high passes turn first and the foothills last. It is the most beautiful fortnight of the Colorado year and the busiest for mountain sessions, so dates are booked well ahead. Colour peaks roughly a week earlier around Aspen and Crested Butte than along the Front Range.
Afternoon thunderstorms. From June through August, convective storms build over the Front Range from around one o’clock most days and being above treeline in one is genuinely dangerous. Mountain sessions in summer therefore run at sunrise, which also gives calm water for reflections and the best odds of wildlife in the meadows.
Enough to plan for. Denver is at 5,280 feet and the mountain locations run from 8,000 to over 11,000, where sustained effort is noticeably harder for anyone arriving from sea level. Allow a day to acclimatise before a session above 9,000 feet, drink far more water than feels necessary, and expect the light to be harder and the sky deeper than the same hour at sea level.
