Seattle has the best portrait light of any city in this catalogue and the worst reputation for it, and both facts come from the same weather. The overcast that sits over the Puget Sound from October to May is a diffuser the size of the sky: no harsh shadows, no squinting, colours deep and saturated, and it holds all day rather than for an hour at each end. Photographers who move here stop planning around golden hour within a year. What the clouds take away is the mountain. Rainier is a hundred kilometres south and visible on maybe a third of days, and every visitor wants it in the frame. It cannot be promised, which is why sessions are planned to work without it and to take it when it appears. The other half of this market is the elopement funnel. Mount Rainier National Park and the North Cascades are within two to three hours, and both are National Park Service land, which means a ceremony requires a Special Use Permit applied for months in advance while a handheld portrait session in a public area generally does not.
July through September is the dry season: clear, mild, long evenings with sunset after nine in midsummer, and the only reliable window for the mountain. October to May is overcast and wet, which is superb for portraits and poor for distant views. Fall colour arrives in the third week of October. Winter days are genuinely short — sunset before 4:30 in December — which compresses the working day more than the rain does.

Five hundred acres of bluff, meadow and beach with the Olympics across the water. The West Point lighthouse is a two-mile walk from the parking, which is worth knowing before booking an hour.
Rusted gasification towers on a hill above Lake Union, with the downtown skyline directly across the water. Industrial and green in the same frame, which nothing else here offers.
A 268-foot waterfall thirty minutes east of the city, at its most powerful in spring snowmelt. Mist reaches the lower viewpoint and will coat a lens within minutes.
Paradise and Sunrise are the two meadows, and the wildflower bloom lasts about three weeks from late July. Timed-entry reservations apply in peak season; snow closes the high roads until late June.

For the ceremony, yes — a wedding at Mount Rainier National Park requires a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service, applied for well in advance, with a fixed list of approved ceremony locations and a cap on group size. Still photography by itself in areas open to the public, with no props or sets, does not require a separate permit. Both the application and the location choice are handled as part of an elopement booking.
The subalpine meadows at Paradise and Sunrise bloom for about three weeks from late July into early August, and the timing moves with how long the snowpack takes to melt. The high-elevation roads often stay closed until late June. It is the most beautiful window of the year in the Pacific Northwest and also the most crowded, with timed-entry reservations in force during peak season.
