Proposal photography

The photographer works from a position agreed in advance with a long lens, and starts on a signal you give rather than on a time we guessed at. You choose the spot and a fallback; both are scouted beforehand, the light at your hour is worked out for each, and the photographer stands somewhere that reads as a tourist with a camera — which, in most of the locations people choose for this, is the least remarkable thing present. Nothing about the setup is visible from where you will be standing.

Plans change on the day and that is normal. Weather, a crowd, or simply losing your nerve for twenty minutes are all accounted for, which is why the booking includes a fallback location and a signal instead of a fixed minute. The hour is yours and moving within it costs nothing. Afterwards there is a short portrait session while it is still happening to you, which is where the best frames of the day usually come from.

Three practical things decide whether this works. Get them to the right spot without explaining why, which is easier with a dinner reservation than with a walk that goes nowhere. Face the light rather than standing with your back to it, which the scout settles for you. And do not look for the photographer — the single most common way a surprise proposal stops being a surprise is one person scanning a treeline for somebody with a camera.

Forty retouched photographs within 48 hours and a small preview set the same evening, because people want to tell their families before the story goes stale and a gallery that arrives a week later arrives after every phone photograph anybody else took has already been shared.
