Haleakalā rises above 10,000 feet and has its own weather; the Hāna road runs through genuine rainforest; the west and south coasts are dry and sunny almost every day. A couple can photograph above the clouds at sunrise and on a beach at sunset, and the two are ninety minutes apart. There is one rule here that surprises almost every visitor: a wedding or commercial photography on any Hawaii state beach requires a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Not a suggestion, not a local custom — a right-of-entry permit, from $20, for thirty people at most including the photographer and officiant, for two hours, with no arches, altars, tables or chairs on the sand. It gives no exclusive use of the beach, and it is enforced. Haleakalā adds a second layer. It is a National Park, so a ceremony needs a Special Use Permit — $150, 25 people at most, three weeks ahead — and sunrise viewing inside the summit district requires a separate $1 vehicle reservation released 60 days ahead that often sells out within fifteen minutes. That single reservation decides whether a Maui elopement is a sunrise job or a sunset one, and it has to be settled before anything else is planned.

Timing
April, May, September and October are the best months — dry, warm, and between the two visitor peaks. Winter from December to March brings more rain on the windward side, bigger surf on the north shore, and humpback whales in the channel, which are visible from the beaches from January into March. Summer is hot and reliably dry on the west and south coasts. The leeward side stays sunny in almost any month, which is why most photography happens there.
