Photographer in Maui

Maui compresses an improbable range into a short drive. Haleakalā rises above 10,000 feet and has its own weather; the Hāna road runs through genuine rainforest; the west and south coasts are dry and sunny almost every day. A couple can photograph above the clouds at sunrise and on a beach at sunset, and the two are ninety minutes apart. There is one rule here that surprises almost every visitor: a wedding or commercial photography on any Hawaii state beach requires a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Not a suggestion, not a local custom — a permit, applied for in advance, with conditions on group size, on structures, and on what may be set up on the sand. It is inexpensive and it is enforced. Haleakalā adds a second layer. It is a National Park, so a ceremony needs a Special Use Permit, and sunrise viewing inside the summit district requires a separate reservation released 60 days ahead and gone within minutes. That single reservation decides whether a Maui elopement is a sunrise job or a sunset one, and it has to be settled before anything else is planned.

When to visit Maui for photos?

April, May, September and October are the best months — dry, warm, and between the two visitor peaks. Winter from December to March brings more rain on the windward side, bigger surf on the north shore, and humpback whales in the channel, which are visible from the beaches from January into March. Summer is hot and reliably dry on the west and south coasts. The leeward side stays sunny in almost any month, which is why most photography happens there.

Photo spots in Maui: hours and permits

Makena Cove

A small lava-framed cove on the south shore, also called Secret Beach. The most-booked ceremony site on Maui and small enough that two bookings at once do not work.

Best time
Sunset
Permits
A Hawaii DLNR permit is required for any wedding or commercial photography on a state beach.

Haleakalā summit

Above the cloud layer at 10,023 feet, looking into a crater. It is near freezing at dawn and the drive from the coast takes two hours — this is a serious undertaking, not an add-on.

Best time
Sunrise, by reservation
Permits
Park entrance fee, plus a separate sunrise reservation released 60 days ahead. Ceremonies require a Special Use Permit.

Ironwoods Beach, Kapalua

Ironwood trees over a crescent of sand on the north-west coast, with Molokaʻi across the channel. Quieter than the Kāʻanapali resort beaches and the better choice for a small ceremony.

Best time
Golden hour
Permits
DLNR permit required for weddings and commercial photography.

Pāʻia and the north shore

A plantation town of painted timber storefronts, with Hoʻokipa and the windsurfers beyond it. The one location on the island that looks like somewhere people live rather than visit.

Best time
Morning
Permits
Free handheld in town. Beach sessions require a DLNR permit.

Upcountry Kula and the Haleakalā slopes

Jacaranda, eucalyptus and pasture at 3,000 feet, with the whole isthmus below and the West Maui mountains beyond. Jacaranda bloom purple through the Kula roads in spring.

Best time
Late afternoon
Permits
Largely private agricultural land; access requires the owner’s permission.

Frequently asked questions about Maui

Do we need a permit to get married on a beach in Hawaii?

Yes. Any wedding ceremony or commercial photography on a Hawaii state beach requires a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, applied for in advance. It is inexpensive and it is enforced, with conditions on group size, on what may be set up on the sand, and on structures such as arches and chairs. The permit is applied for as part of an elopement or destination wedding booking.

How do Haleakalā sunrise reservations work?

Entry to the Haleakalā summit district between 3am and 7am requires a reservation that is separate from the park entrance fee. A block is released online 60 days in advance and is typically gone within minutes, with a smaller number released two days out. This single reservation decides whether a Maui elopement is a sunrise job or a sunset one, so it is settled before the rest of the day is planned.

What is the best time of year to photograph on Maui?

April, May, September and October — dry, warm and between the two visitor peaks, with the best availability and the lowest rates. Winter brings more rain on the windward side and bigger surf on the north shore, but also humpback whales in the channel from January into March, which are visible from the beaches. The leeward west and south coasts stay sunny in almost any month, which is why most sessions happen there.

Can we photograph at sunrise on the summit and on the beach the same day?

Yes, and it is a common shape for an elopement here, but it is a long day. The summit is a two-hour drive from the coast and near freezing before dawn, so it means leaving at about 3am. Couples who do it usually photograph the ceremony at the summit at sunrise, rest through the middle of the day, and return for beach portraits at sunset — which needs the DLNR beach permit as well as the park reservation.
