Why choose Graduation photos in Washington, DC?

Washington is a graduation city built for the photograph: the Lincoln Memorial faces east, so the steps and the columns light up at sunrise, and the Reflecting Pool holds the Washington Monument behind the graduate. The constraint is the hour rather than the location — the memorials are genuinely empty until about half past seven and full by nine — and, for a paid session, the Park Service permit rules, which changed in 2025 and are checked for the date.

Worth knowing about Washington, DC

The steps of the Lincoln Memorial are open to photography, but the chamber above them is not: the Park Service lists the Lincoln Memorial above the white marble steps as an area where filming and photography are not permitted. The cap-and-gown frame is taken on the steps, facing out over the Reflecting Pool — and the Capitol dome, whose grounds need a Capitol Police permit, is photographed from the Mall side instead.

FAQ — Graduation photos in Washington, DC

Do we need a permit for graduation photos on the National Mall?

It is currently unsettled in Washington, DC. National Park Service guidance under the EXPLORE Act of 2025 exempts shoots of eight or fewer people with hand-carried equipment in public areas, but the National Mall and Memorial Parks permits office still requires a permit for photography beyond general visitor use — a $90 application plus a $50 location fee for up to ten people, filed at least four days ahead. A graduation session with a family group larger than eight needs a permit under either rule.

When should DC graduation photos be taken?

One to three weeks before the ceremony, at sunrise. The memorials are effectively empty until about 7:30am and busy for the rest of the day, and photographing before the ceremony means an unwrinkled gown, a schedule you control and no risk of being late to your own graduation. April sessions can also catch the cherry blossoms.
