Formal portraits taken on the day compete with a Mass, a schedule and a court of fourteen people, and they end up happening in whatever hour is left over — usually the worst-lit one. A separate portrait session beforehand gives the dress an unhurried hour in good light, with no one waiting, and it produces the photograph that actually gets printed and framed. It is the recommendation families take up most often once they have seen both outcomes, and it costs less than the day’s coverage.

The Mass is covered within whatever the parish permits, and parishes differ more than people expect: most restrict movement during the liturgy and some prohibit flash entirely. Those restrictions are confirmed with your parish before the day rather than discovered in the aisle, and the ceremony is covered from fixed positions with fast lenses and no flash.

The court is the part that needs planning rather than improvising. Fourteen teenagers in matching dresses photograph well for about ten minutes and then stop cooperating, so the group frames are taken early, in a named ten-minute block, with somebody who knows everyone’s name standing beside the camera. That last detail is worth more than any amount of equipment — a photographer calling out names moves a court of fourteen in a quarter of the time.

Five hours covers getting ready, the ceremony, formal portraits and the reception, and two hundred and fifty or more retouched photographs arrive within four weeks.
