The dress is the reason most couples book this, and it photographs beautifully on a beach, a cliff or a lava shore in a way it cannot in a ballroom. What people underestimate is that wearing full wedding attire for ninety minutes in a tropical climate is genuinely hard. The split that works is the dress plus something linen, with an outfit change halfway — the formal frames in the first half while everyone is fresh, the relaxed ones after, which are usually the photographs that end up on the wall.

Timing is planned around the location rather than the diary. Ninety minutes at sunrise or sunset across two locations, with at least one of them away from the resort, because a resort beach photographs like a resort beach wherever in the world it is. Where a beach ceremony or a commercial session needs a permit — which in Hawaii is every state beach without exception — it is applied for as part of the booking.

Book it before you fly rather than on the third day of the trip. The permits take time to process, the good sunset slots at the good beaches are taken first, and a photographer who knows the coast is booked further ahead than the hotel was. A session arranged from a sun lounger on Wednesday is a session at whatever location and whatever hour is left.

Sand and silk are the practical problem nobody mentions. Fine sand and red rock dust both get everywhere and neither brushes out of a dress easily, which is why these sessions work from established surfaces and slickrock rather than from open ground, and why the dress is worth wearing on a day when it no longer has to be perfect. Fifty retouched photographs within five business days. From $395.

Frequently asked questions about Honeymoon session

Should we bring our wedding clothes?

One of you, usually. A dress photographs beautifully on a beach or a cliff and is the reason most couples book this, but wearing full wedding attire for 90 minutes in a tropical climate is genuinely hard. The common split is the dress plus something linen, with an outfit change halfway.

When should we book it?

Before you fly. Permits take time to process, the good sunset slots at the good beaches are taken first, and a photographer who knows the coast is booked further ahead than the hotel was. A session arranged from a sun lounger on the third day is a session at whatever location and whatever hour is left over.

Where should we photograph other than the resort?

Twenty minutes in almost any direction, because a resort beach photographs like a resort beach wherever in the world it is. At least one of the two locations in this session is deliberately away from the hotel — a lava cove, a stretch of coast with rock in it, or somewhere inland and green that looks nothing like the brochure the trip was booked from.

Do we need a permit for a honeymoon photo session?

On a Hawaii state beach, yes — the Department of Land and Natural Resources permit covers commercial photography and not only ceremonies, which surprises couples who assume a portrait session is exempt. It is inexpensive and it is filed as part of the booking. Elsewhere it depends on the location and is confirmed before the date.
